Lactose intolerance

Lactose intolerance is caused by the insufficient production of lactase. Lactase is an enzyme that breaks down lactose (milk sugars) in the small intestine. Complete lactase deficiency is rare, so many people can tolerate lactose in small quantities – they can follow a low-lactose diet.

People with lactose intolerance cannot break down or absorb lactose. Instead, the lactose travels into the large intestine, where bacteria quickly use it as food. This results in symptoms such as flatulence, swelling, and even diarrhoea.

Fazer product suitability
Milk is not an essential ingredient in cooking and baking. Almost all Fazer breads, most coffee breads, and much of our confectionery is suitable for those with lactose intolerance. Our restaurants offer lactose-free options every day. They're marked on the menu with an L.

When is a product lactose-free?
A product can be classified as lactose-free when an analysis reveals no lactose whatsoever.
Low-lactose products may contain a maximum of 1 gram of lactose per 100 grams of product.
